Marketing Tip #6: Sell more to existing customers

When looking for ways to boost revenue, remember this sage advice. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. When translated for small businesses, this simply means that revenue from one existing customer is worth more than two potential sales from new customers.

The logic is simple. First, it's been proven over and over that selling to existing customers is easier than trying to get a new customer in the door. Plus, it's a lot cheaper because you don't have the associated marketing expense.

Marketing Tip #5: Deliver and Satisfy In

Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it...especially in a small business. If your wish is to sell more, your success could prevent future growth and the reason is simple. Every sale creates a new customer, which in turn creates greater demands on your time. You need to deliver products AND get paid for it, which involves back-office work that can distract you from future growth.

To keep your growth on track, automate the delivery of certain elements of your customer service to ensure that no customer slips through the cracks. This can be done by creating an autoresponder sequence for customers that sends a thank you card or gift and follows-up after a few weeks with a survey about how they like your product. You'd be surprised at how much this helps people feel appreciated.

Grow Your Business with Social Media

Social media and blogs are a key part to any inbound marketing strategy. Here are 6 ways they help grow your business:
  1. Quick to Start. You could launch a Facebook page today or get a blog going in a few days.
  2. Low Cost. You can get started in social media and blogging for very little or no money. They are among the most cost-effective methods of reaching your audience.
  3. Instant Interactivity. Both blogs and social media can give you nearly instant market feedback - good or bad. We get all kinds of feedback through the comments on our blog; people also leave reviews and other comments for us on Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media channels.
  4. It's the Search Engines, Silly. Surveys indicate that 90% or more of people begin their purchasing process in search engines. Blogs and social media make it more likely that your prospects will find you online when they search.

When patents attack Android

I have worked in the tech sector for over two decades. Microsoft and Apple have always been at each other’s throats, so when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what's going on. Here is what’s happening:

Android is on fire. More than 550,000 Android devices are activated every day, through a network of 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers. Android and other platforms are competing hard against each other, and that’s yielding cool new devices and amazing mobile apps for consumers.

But Android’s success has yielded something else: a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents

Adapting AdWords for time-strapped small businesses

This is the latest post in our series profiling entrepreneurial Googlers working on products across the company and around the world. In this post, you’ll read how a small team took a successful grassroots approach to helping businesses advertise online. - Ed.

In early 2010, I was talking with some friends from Google’s India office about how to help small, local businesses advertise online. We found that small business owners the world over had a key commonality: very little time. We decided to tackle this problem head on, with the hopes of making the advertising process quicker and easier for small businesses.

4 ways to develop better customer relationships

Information is power. It is also the key to effective customer retention, because if you really know your customers you can give them the service and respect they deserve. But unless you have a photographic memory (or a really small client list), you will not be able to discover and track everything there is to know about your clients. Here are a few things you can do that will help.

Calling from Gmail now in 38 languages, with lower rates to over 150 destinations

We’re always trying to make it easier for people to connect—whether that means sending an email, chatting or video chatting, you can reach the people you care about from right inside Gmail. Last year, we made it possible for those of you in the U.S. to call any mobile phone or landline directly from Gmail and starting today, we are making this available to many more of you who use Gmail outside the U.S. by offering calling in 38 new languages.

You can now buy calling credit in your choice of four currencies (Euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars) and there are no connection fees, so you only pay for the time you talk.

Gone fishin’—piloting community supported fisheries at Google

I've always loved the ocean—I was born in Shanghai, which means "upon the sea.” And as a chef, I'm always drawn to food that claims a spirit of place. After moving to California, near Half Moon Bay, I began visiting the docks to buy seafood, and got to know the fishermen.

Over time, it became evident to me that this part of our food supply is broken: many consumers purchase stale, unsustainably-raised fish from chain grocers. Meanwhile, fishermen often sell their diminishing catch to wholesalers at a very low profit, meaning their livelihoods are no longer sustained by their catch. There’s also the environmental factor to consider: Overfishing and illegal practices cause worldwide decline in ocean wildlife populations and wreak havoc on underwater habitats—not to mention the carbon footprint of transporting seafood far from its origin.

The Strategic Business Blueprint

A healthy business is a growing business. But for many small businesses, growth is a double edged sword. As revenue increases, so do the demands on your time and resources. You can either add staff (which cuts profits) or find systems to sustain growth.
The secret to the success of many businesses is mapping out the right strategy and implementing it in a system that's easy to use and powerful enough to make them grow fast.  We recently recorded a webinar on strategic business mapping.

Marketing Tip #4: Convert More Leads

"We needed CRM for salespeople across locations. What I didn't expect was powerful marketing automation that has helped me increase sales conversions." -Richard Hite, The Barber School
When it comes to hitting revenue goals, every sale counts. That's why it's so painful when a potential deal slips through the cracks. The more leads you have, the worse the problem becomes. But why?

Most sales people have a list of qualified leads. A few leads are ready to buy today, others will be ready next week, and still others will be ready next month. If the list is small, it's easy to manage. But as lead volume increases, tracking everything becomes nearly impossible. So sales people do what they are paid to do--close hot deals and let everything else slip through the cracks.
