Remove Dates From Permalink

How do you you remove the dates from your permalink structure without ruining all the hard earned links you have developed?

Glad you asked… It really is very simple… (Note I tried the various plugins first but had issues… In the end this solution is faster for the visitor, quicker to implement, and simpler.)

Assuming your current permalink structure is /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

  1. First change your permalink structure to /%postname%/

  2. Create a .htaccess file (or modify an existing file)

  3. Add this line above any other WordPress declarations: RedirectMatch 301 /dddd/dd/dd/(.*) /$1

  4. Make sure the .htaccess file is in the root of your blog

Here is an example .htaccess file direct from one of my blogs…
RedirectMatch 301 /dddd/dd/dd/(.*) /$1

# BEGIN WordPress

RewriteEngine On

RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

# END WordPress

By 301 redirecting you are telling the search engines that the content has moved to a new location. While there is typically some drop off during the transition, your blog will come back stronger for making the change.

As an example of the effectiveness…

Here is an old url: http://www.golfballdriver.com/2008/03/18/michelle-wie-and-robin-lopez-at-charity-auction-pic/

which now redirects to the new url: http://www.golfballdriver.com/michelle-wie-and-robin-lopez-at-charity-auction-pic/

SAMSUNG TO ANNOUNCE NEW GALAXY AND ATIV DEVICES IN SAMSUNG PREMIERE 2013

samsung-premiere-2013

Samsung has announced a new event taking place on June 20 to announce its new Galaxy and ATIV devices. Announced via its press page as well as on Twitter, the teaser image also shows what is presumably the new Galaxy and ATIV devices. Also, it appears that just like the launch event for the Galaxy S4, this event – called Samsung Premiere 2013 – will be streamed live on Samsung’s YouTube page.

With Intel’s new Haswell processor architecture to make its debut at Computex next month, it may very well be that Samsung will be unveiling the first ATIV hybrid laptops running on the new Haswell chip. In addition, we’ve been seeing numerous leaks of a Galaxy S4 Mini (a collection of these can be found here)- and even a Galaxy S4 Active - so our money’s on these to be unveiled at the event as well. Of course, the Korean giants could also blow our minds with a new aluminium-clad Galaxy Note III…but it is highly unlikely that that’s going to happen.

Teenage girl creates tiny device that could charge a smartphone in 20 seconds

// ]]>

Tiny charger

When you’re out all day, it’s a huge pain to charge your mobile devices. Even if you remember to bring a charger and get lucky enough to find a free electrical outlet at a coffee shop, you still have to sit there for around an hour or so to get a full charge. 18-year-old high school student Eesha Khare invented a tiny device that could potentially charge a phone in around 20 to 30 seconds.

At this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, Khare displayed her tiny device. Referred to as a supercapacitor, the item is small enough to fit inside a standard smartphone battery. To demonstrate the device, she had it power a small LED — certainly not a power-hungry smartphone battery that dies before your train gets to your stop. Along with lasting around 10,000 charge cycles (as opposed to a standard battery’s 1,000), the capacitor is also flexible, so it can be maneuvered into oddly shaped spaces.

Khare’s capacitor (which we hope she’ll call the Khare Kapacitor if it ever hits the market) incorporates nanostructures to help store more energy per volume than a standard battery, hold a charge longer, and deliver a charge more quickly. After charging it for just 20 seconds, she was able to power that small LED. She hasn’t applied the battery to mobile devices just yet, but the theory has been tested, and that is the supercapacitor’s eventual goal.

Keep Readers Coming Back to Your Blog

readers

If you have a blog, you want to keep readers coming back. You can attract readers in a variety of ways, but keeping them is a little harder. You may end up high in the search engines for tons of keywords and pull in tons of unique page views. But how do you keep these new blog readers interested enough to come back again?

Many bloggers don’t. They do all the right things to get people there, but fail at engaging people enough that they’ll come back to read some more. What are the tricks, then, to keep readers coming back to your blog?

There are no tricks, which is a good thing. Tricks are hard. The techniques to get people coming back are instead just common sense that many people seem to forget when they’re writing their blogs. The main technique is to actually write something someone wants to read.

Obviously, your blog has to be interesting. If you get tons of unique page views and no comments at all, then the people reading your posts don’t find them interesting enough to comment on, and they’re probably not coming back.

If you’re using SEO in your posts, then you’re blogging correctly for the search engines. But don’t forget to actually make the posts about something, too. A post about shoes that simply goes on to say that you could pick a red shoe, or blue shoes, and there are 800,000 different kinds of shoes without ever offering anything but that kind of fluff won’t get people to come back. If you explain the benefits of choosing the red shoe over the blue one, then you have actual content.

Make sure that your content is actually something people need to know. Really bad SEO writing about those shoes, for example, might manage to get the keywords in a good number of times and still be about more than listing types of shoes. That doesn’t mean it’s good.

A really unimaginative person who doesn’t have anything to say about shoes might write a post about how you could choose red shoes over blue shoes because you like red better. Or that red shoes are different from blue shoes because one is dyed red . . . and the other, blue. This kind of SEO writing is all over the Internet. It might pull in keyword-related traffic, but who will come back for more of that?

To keep readers coming back to your blog you have to engage them somehow. Don’t use a keyword-stuffed post about nothing, making it interesting at the same time-it’s not that hard to do. How-to posts are very popular, as are posts with useful lists like “Top 10 Reasons Red Shoes are Better than Blue.”

Just don’t stop at a catchy title. Actually deliver what you said you would. Give the reader something interesting enough that they’ll want to check back later to see what else you might be writing about in your blog and you’ll keep the reader coming back.
